A "red eye" is a catch-all term for red, irritated, or bloodshot eyes. The redness occurs when tiny blood vessels beneath the surface of your eye enlarge or become inflamed. It is usually a reaction to something irritating your eye.
Redness can occur in one or both eyes. It can appear gradually or suddenly, as in allergies or an eye injury.
You may experience red eyes as well as other symptoms such as:
Pain in the eyes.
Itching.
Discharge from the eyes.
Eyes that are swollen.
Vision changes, such as blurred vision.
Irritation or injury to your eye can cause it to turn red. Some cases of eye redness can be treated at home, but others require medical attention. Our eye care provider can treat you if you have pain, fever, blurred vision, discharge, or other symptoms in addition to your red eye.
